Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the traditional sextet style, and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. Its more punk-rock sound reflected the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved ability on the drums and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloying than previously recorded performances.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded their Amsterdam live show which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between.
