How to Replace an audi a3 replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The replacement car key audi can start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly if they're an Bosch model like ours. 5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your vehicle.
