When compared to Labuan Bajo, the name Golo Mori may still be unfamiliar to many people. In fact, golo mori convention center Mori is a village at the outermost tip to the south of Labuan Bajo City, the capital of West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province.

Although its location is a little remote, Golo Mori really cannot be underestimated. In the language of the Manggarai tribe, the name of this village means 'mountain of God'. As for the Bima tribe, Golo Mori is interpreted as 'the sword of life'.

The population is around 2,034 people, according to data from the West Manggarai Central Bureau of Statistics in 2019. As many as 80 percent of them work as farmers and fishermen who inhabit four hamlets, namely Lenteng, Jarak, Lo'o, and Compang. Administratively, the area is included in Komodo Subdistrict.

Geographically, the village covers 14,243 square kilometers and is surrounded by hills with elevations between 200-600 meters above sea level. As far as the eye can see, only savanna covered the hills, sometimes giving a green sensation during the rainy season and yellow-brown during the dry season.

Dozens of rice fields also peek out from behind the green hills. At first glance, the hills here are similar to Teletubbies Hill in Lemes Village, Macang Tanggar Village, neighboring Golo Mori.

The atmosphere there is so quiet. There is only the swish of the wind and the loud roar of the waves of the Molo Strait, occasionally the sound of buffalo herds, the most common animal kept by the local community.

If we climb to the highest point in the hills, we can clearly see the pink-sand Rinca Island and the Komodo Island National Park area, home to Indonesia's original ancient animal, the Komodo dragon. The charm of Golo Mori is not only the hills and serene atmosphere, but also the area whose coast has a row of beautiful beaches, which are a pity to miss.

There is Pasir Panjang Beach with beautiful white sand extending for 1 kilometer. Then there is Nggoer Beach, Soknar Beach, Lajar Beach, and several others. The sea water is clear turquoise blue and the underwater scenery is no less beautiful.

The distance from golo mori itdc area labuan bajo Mori beach to Rinca Island is very close, no more than 400 meters. But crossing it takes quite a struggle, because the water current is very strong.

This happens because the Molo Strait is a meeting of currents from the Sumba Strait and the Flores Sea. So it is not uncommon for fishing boats to be given weights in the form of river stones on the keel so that they are not easily dragged by the whirlpool.

Despite having the tourism potential of a slice of heaven, until the end of 2021, it took more effort to reach this village, from the city center of Labuan Bajo. The road trip must be taken for almost four hours driving through terrain in the form of dirt, steep, and rocky roads that make the whole body always shake in the vehicle.

The journey is also often blocked by small rivers, which in the rainy season are relatively difficult to traverse. Not to mention that because it is rarely crossed, the rocky terrain there is often covered with weeds and tree trunks.

New Access

Golo Village Chief Mori Samaila said that the fastest route to Labuan Bajo from their village is to use a sea motor or boat. "To get to Labuan Bajo from Golo Mori using a sea motor (boat) takes at most 2.5-3 hours. Residents also have to pass through the strong currents of the Molo Strait to get to Labuan Bajo because land access is very difficult," Samaila said as reported by Antara.

Another resident named Primus, as quoted by the Youtube channel of the Presidential Secretariat, explained that due to the isolation of the village on the western tip of Flores Island, during the diarrhea outbreak many were not treated and ended in death. However, Samaila and Primus and all residents of Golo Mori can now breathe a sigh of relief.

Since April 2022, the government has decided to build the 25km Labuan Bajo-Golo Mori road with a budget of Rp481 billion and divided into five segments. In addition to building the road, the central government, represented by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, also improved the quality of four bridges with a total length of 175 meters in Wae Mburak, Wae Kenari, Nanganae, and Soknar.

The presence of the new road can shorten the journey of residents at the tip of Flores Island golo mori convention center to Labuan Bajo to around 30 minutes. "Previously, the section to Golo Mori Village was a dirt and rocky road and the distance was three hours. Now it can be reached in 30 minutes from Labuan Bajo City with a very beautiful view," said PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono.

The Ministry of PUPR not only builds smooth two-lane asphalt roads, but also prioritizes the principles of quality, aesthetics, and environmental sustainability. This is done by planting many shade trees along the road so that it feels more comfortable, safe, and cool.

This new access was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on March 14, 2023. The President hopes that the presence of this new road will make the Labuan Bajo and Golo Mori areas develop well. "We see that the road from Labuan Bajo to Golo Mori has been completed. This will improve connectivity in order to develop Labuan Bajo as a super priority tourist destination," President Jokowi said.

On that occasion, President Jokowi tested the new road as well as visited the Golo Mori MICE area which was built on a 20-hectare land. This international meeting center consists of a convention hall with a capacity of 400 people, VVIP lobby, VVIP lounge, VIP room, media center room, observation deck, beach club, amphitheater for 500 people, and wooden pier.

Uniquely, the multipurpose building faces directly to Rinca Island and is only limited by the Molo Strait. This MICE area is managed by PT Pengembangan Pariwisata Indonesia (Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation).

"The development of the Golo Mori area as a new tourism magnet MICE destination in Eastern Indonesia, to support the increase in tourist visits to the growing Labuan Bajo Super Priority Tourism Destination (DPSP)," said ITDC Managing Director Ari Respati.

Labuan Bajo will be the venue for the 42nd ASEAN Summit 2023, on May 9-11, 2023. ITDC estimates that around 1,000 participants from 10 ASEAN member countries plus Timor Leste will visit Labuan Bajo.

Indonesia holds the chairmanship of the 2023 ASEAN Summit and this is the fifth time after previously in 1976, 1996, 2003, and 2011. The theme of the 2023 ASEAN Summit this time is ASEAN Matters: Epicenter of Growth.
