World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading

Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric stats on weapons, armor and rings. They also boost extra bonuses like PvE damage and crit chance.

For example, a weapon with the upgrade template that ends in % will gain 3% attack damage every time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

The cost of upgrading an item upgrader kit is determined by the item's level. The cost increases as the item's level rises.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into weapons, armor and trinkets to give them a boost in stats or to add an additional effect. These can be obtained by crafting, purchasing from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Certain upgrades also come with specific cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment that has a slot for them; the item must be at a minimum upgraded to blue level in order for the component to be applied. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied once. They are not able to be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and Enrichments are a type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascended equipment, as well in some items that aren't ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment from the ascended state or completing a mission in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it is applied to (for example, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades boost an item's Mark Level, or Rarity, allowing players to create stronger versions of the equipment with less Upgrade Crystals than is required to achieve the same level of upgrade through normal methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the defense or attack properties of a weapon, or armor.
