World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading

Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric stats on weapons, armor and rings. They also boost extra bonuses such as damage from PvE and crit chance.

Components

Upgrade components can only be used on equipment with a slot. The item upgrades must be upgraded to blue level before the component can be used. An upgrade can be prefixed or a suffix, modifying the name of the equipment with which it is used (for examplethe "Canthan Armor Insignia is changed to Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost an item's Mark Level, or Rarity, allowing players to create stronger versions of that equipment with the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than is required to reach the same level of upgrade using normal methods.

A 'boost' upgrade can change the attack or defense attributes of a weapon, or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated Crazed Mechanist, these upgrades can be crafted at the Portative Forging Station. These upgrades can be purchased by purchasing them in the cash shop or by getting them from enemies while upgrading other gear.

Each upgrade increases the chance that a higher-tier version of an item will be dropped at the next reset. This gives players the opportunity to upgrade their gear even in the event that they don't know how much it will be improved after an update.

Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process can be expensive, and there is a significant risk that the item may be obsolete or even break if it fails. Each level of an item requires various components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained from the completion of Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or on the upgrade tab of crafting tables. Each completed Upgrade Recipe yields a number of Technology Points. These points can be used to upgrade the item, and once enough points are earned, the upgrade can be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When the player upgrade a piece of equipment the original item is replaced by an item that is new. This means that the same armor piece will get an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item will also come with a bonus of its own. This can be a disadvantage because it can cause the item to become more expensive, even if you don't require it.
