Combining form and function, French-door refrigerators offer elegant double doors that open to a spacious fridge up the top and a freezer drawer below. Special features like door-to-door dispensers, high-end ice machines, and customizable flex drawers make them stand out from the rest.

We consulted experts such as Ladina Schopf, interior designer architect, founder, and co-founder of LS Projects, for tips on how to select the best one. They looked at the capacity of storage, layout, and energy efficiency among other factors.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name of the series suggests that GE’s Profile series is targeted at consumers who want to integrate cutting-edge features in their kitchens. This fridge is loaded with them all including the Keurig K cup coffee maker in the door to a smart dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. This refrigerator is costly and I expected more.

This refrigerator is a good choice, despite the small blip. It comes with a huge freezer compartment, which is uncommon in counter-depth French door refrigerators. Additionally, it holds a good amount of frozen food when compared to similar models.

Inside the fridge, you'll find 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment is 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is about par for a French door fridge that costs this much. It has a decent-sized refrigerator with an ice maker in the left door. However it's not the biggest one I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in each compartment to create a customized storage layout for the items you need to keep. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS also looks attractive. Its LED lighting is a nice feature, and the in-door storage bins come with the third shelf, which can fold down to make it possible to store tall items. The drawers include temperature controls that let you set them to Meat, Beverage, or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, however I found their plastic textured coatings a bit difficult on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator is equipped with a complete set of features you'd expect from a fridge at this price with Wi-Fi and app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app, available for iOS and Android devices can let you control your fridge from anywhere in the world, and has many options for customizing. It will also send you notifications when the door is left unlocked, when the fridge or freezer must be defrosted and when the filter has to be changed.

It would be nice if GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill it's an option in other GE fridges that allow you to preset how many cups of water you'd like to dispense simultaneously. The fridge displays a countdown timer to reveal how much water remains but it's not as effective as Precise fill.

Bosch Counter Depth french door fridge with ice & water dispenser Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is an impressive product. It's designed to look like it's a seamless part of your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment which keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer and two compressors to preserve food. The ice maker is one of the best we've ever tested and produces a pyramid-shaped Ice with low use of water. This fridge is perfect for a small household or a kitchenette with a built-in appearance and top-of-the line food preservation.

This refrigerator was the highest-rated refrigerator in our Refrigerators test for several reasons. Its freezer temperatures remained constant at just above 0°F and never fluctuated more than a tiny fraction - this is essential to avoid freezer burn. The fridge section of the refrigerator also did well. It reached the initial temperature set within a matter of hours, and remained at that temperature throughout our testing.

Bosch is known for its high-end appliances and appliances, so it's not a surprise that this counter-depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance with the option of connecting to your home Wi-Fi and Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app allows you to control and monitor the refrigerator remotely using your smartphone or tablet. The fridge is expensive, however it has top-quality features and functions for the price.

While the fridge is an amazing appliance, it's important to know the limitations. It has a limited space for shelves, so you'll have to think creatively when storing tall items. The shelves are also not spillproof and can easily be stained or damaged by sharp items. The trays are easily removed from the refrigerator. However, they should be cleaned frequently to stop the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth fridge is a great choice for those who need lots of space within the space of a compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge is built with an ordinary French door design, and two rows of spill-capture shelving and a set of crisper drawers. The top right shelf can be folded down to give tall items more space. There's also a full-width storage drawer for products from the deli and an inside water dispenser.

The refrigerator comes with an ice maker, making it easy to move the ice when needed. The freezer also has thoughtful design features, such as sliding drawers that can help you organize your belongings. It also comes with a large bin that holds plenty of frozen food and an additional ice storage bin.

Another great feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can control the temperature, lighting, and more of your fridge from your smartphone. It's an easy way to monitor your refrigerator and manage it, especially when not at home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat however it doesn't improve the efficiency of the fridge. In fact it took a bit longer to defrost and chill food in this refrigerator than other refrigerators we tried. This is likely due to the bigger capacity.

The doors pose a problem with this fridge. They have handles that are sunken on the front that allow shorter people to easily open them from the bottom, but they're not easy for taller people to guide closed without slamming them. It would have been better if they came with a front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is a great choice for those looking to combine the aesthetics of a French-door refrigerator with a more efficient design. Its capacity is higher than average for a counter-depth model, and it cools evenly and has a great layout. It's also less expensive than the top counter depth refrigerator that comes with an ice maker, making it an attractive choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

If you're looking for an french door fridge freezers door fridge that doesn't cost you a fortune this Frigidaire is a good choice. It's a basic fridge that may not be as eye-catching as some of its competitors, but it still has enough features to make a an excellent option. Its most important feature, the adjustable temperature drawer helps to keep food items such as vegetables and meat fresher longer. It also has a large water dispenser as well as a good Ice machine that is fast.

The "Chill Drawer", which is located over the two crisper bins, is a nice feature. The drawer allows you to divert some of the refrigerator's cooling power directly to this area, meaning you can put away food items that require extra attention. You can adjust this feature by using the slider located on the on the outside of the drawer. It is also possible to use this to adjust the general cooling settings for the entire fridge though I've found that adjusting the general settings tends produce better results than specific ones.

During my tests, the refrigerator's temperatures stayed fairly consistent across different areas of the refrigerator. Temperatures at the top and bottom of the fridge didn't stray much from 38 degrees, and the middle of the fridge was within a degree of 36. This is a great performance, but doesn't quite make it to the top of our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also combine this fridge with a smart thermometer to get more precise measurements of your fridge's temperature.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made of gray-bodied stainless with a "smudge resistant" finish. It does an excellent job of removing streaks and fingerprints even when compared to the shiny stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tried.
