French Door Refrigerator With Ice Maker Review

Melding form with function, French-door refrigerators come with stylish double doors that open to a spacious fridge up the top and a freezer drawer beneath. Special features like door-to-door dispensers, higher-end ice machines and adjustable flex drawers make them stand out from the crowd.

We contacted Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect and the founder of LS Projects - for her tips on how to select the best one. We looked at storage capacity, layout and energy efficiency among other factors.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

Like its name implies, the GE Profile series is targeted at those who wish to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchens. This fridge has them all, from a Keurig K cup coffee maker in the door, to a clever dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Given that this fridge costs more, I'd expect better.

This fridge is a good choice, despite the small blip. It features a large freezer compartment which is uncommon for counter-depth french door fridge hitachi door fridges. It also has a large capacity for frozen food items compared to other models.

Inside the fridge, you'll find 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment offers 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is about par for the size of a French door fridge that costs this much. It has a decent sized icemaker in the left door. But, it's not the largest one I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in both compartments for the perfect storage solution. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is good-looking, too. Its LED lighting is a nice touch, and the in-door storage bins feature a third shelf that folds up beneath itself to allow you to store large items. The drawers are equipped with temperature controls, so you can set them to Beverage, Meat, or Deli settings. The drawers are easy to open and close, but I found the textured plastic coatings to be a bit rough on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator is equipped with a complete set of features you'd expect from a refrigerator at this price with Wi-Fi and app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app, available for iOS and Android devices, lets you control your fridge from anywhere in the world, and offers many options for customizing. It also sends you notifications when the door is unlocked and when the freezer or fridge needs to be defrosted, and when the filter requires a change.

It would be nice if GE PYE22PYNFS came with Precise Fill which is an option that is available in other GE refrigerators that allows you to preset how many cups of water you'd like to dispense at a time. The fridge shows a countdown to reveal how much water is left however it's not as helpful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is a striking piece. It's designed to look like it's a seamless part in your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also boasts a veggie compartment to keep fruits and vegetables fresher longer and dual compressors to ensure the best preservation of food. The ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient and makes the shape of a pyramid using only water. This fridge is perfect for a single household or a kitchenette that wants an elegant design and top of the best food preservation.

This fridge was the top-rated refrigerator in our Refrigerators test, for various reasons. The temperature of the freezer remained stable at a level that was just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and never fluctuating by more than a fraction an inch. This is essential in preventing freezing burn. The fridge's fridge section also performed well, reaching the desired temperature for initial set within a matter of hours and keeping the temperature constant over the course of our testing.

Bosch is known for its top-of-the-line appliances which is why it's no surprise that this counter-depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance, with the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. The app allows you to monitor and control your refrigerator remotely from your tablet or smartphone. The refrigerator is costly and has great features and capabilities at a reasonable cost.

It's important to understand the limitations of the fridge. It is possible to be inventive with tall items since the fridge has a limited shelf space. The shelves are also not impervious to spills and could easily be stained or damaged by sharp items. The trays can be easily removed from the refrigerator. However, they must be cleaned frequently to stop the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth refrigerator is a great choice for those who require lots of space within an extremely compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the refrigerator has the standard French-door layout, with gallon-sized door bins on each door, two rows of spill-capture shelves and a set sleeker drawers. The upper right shelf can be folded down to give tall items more room. There's also a full-width storage drawer for food items and an internal water dispenser.

This refrigerator is equipped with an ice maker, making it easy to transfer the frozen ice whenever you need it. The freezer also has thoughtful design features, like sliding drawers that can help you sort your things. It also has a large bin that can accommodate plenty of frozen food items and an additional storage bin for ice.

Another awesome feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can manage the temperature, lighting, and other aspects of your refrigerator from your smartphone. It's an easy way to monitor your refrigerator and manage it, particularly when you're not at home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat however it doesn't improve the efficiency of the fridge. This fridge took longer to defrost food and chill it than other models we tested. This could be due to the bigger capacity.

The doors pose a problem with this fridge. The handles with a sunken design allow shorter people to open them from the bottom. However, taller people still have a hard time closing them without slamming them. It would have been more effective if these had front-mounted handles.

The "Chill Drawer", which sits above the two crisper bins, is another great feature. You can adjust this feature using an adjustable slider that is located just in the middle of the drawer. You can also set the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the general settings work better than the specific ones.

During my experiments, I noticed that the temperatures in the refrigerator were fairly consistent across different areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the refrigerator didn't vary significantly from 38 degrees. This is a solid performance, but it isn't quite at the top of our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be paired with a smart thermostat to obtain more precise readings of the internal temperature of your fridge.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's exterior is constructed of grey-bodied stainless steel which has a "smudge-proof" finish. It does a great job of preventing streaks and fingerprints from appearing, even compared to shiny stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tested.
