How to Replace an audi key replacement near me G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different pins for the connector and they have different functions however the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare audi key in a salvage shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. 5. Tachometer
