Best Over the Ear Headphones

Wireless headphones allow you to listen to podcasts or music anywhere, without the necessity of running an audio cable from your device. They are ideal for public transport, while at work or at home.

Wireless over-ear headphones may have an elegant design and outstanding noise cancellation. They are usually packaged in a stylish case.

Soundcore Life Q30

These earphones are an important upgrade over the Soundcore Life 2 of late-2018. They appear better, feel more durable, and have a more polished appearance. The hinges are tighter and the soft leather ear cups are a bit larger. They're still made of plastic, but they're more polished. You can also swap out the 3.5mm cable for a premium USB-C version so that you can connect them to stationary Hi-Fi systems and mobile Hi-Res players. They also come with two mics built in that worked well in our tests using FaceTime, Skype and Microsoft Teams calls.

The Soundcore app offers a wide range of EQ presets that can be saved and altered to play podcasts and music in the style that you like. This is the thing that sets these headphones apart from other ANC headphones, and the Soundcore app is very easy to use.

The Q30's 40mm speaker effectively block the majority of ambient noise when ANC is turned on. This creates an extremely pleasant listening experience. The Q30's sound signature is natural, but it's a bit harsh on treble. Some may find the bass response lacking (we got better results using the Bass Booster EQ). But, you can rectify this using the Soundcore application, as there's an eight-band equalizer to help you tinker.

These headphones have a power button and pairing button on the left earcup as well as a USB-C port for charging. The right earcup has buttons for play/pause, volume up/down and volume up/down. By double-clicking these controls, you can skip tracks or replay the previous one. You can also use voice commands to ask them to change modes or set alarms. The right earcup can be covered with your hand to activate ambient mode, to allow you to hear what's happening around you without removing the headphones.

These headphones have a fantastic battery life. The Q30 lasts for an hour longer in our tests when ANC was turned on than its rivals. This allows you to take advantage of the long flight, or a full day at work. The included USB-C cord lets you quickly recharge them. You'll also receive an alert when your battery is about to run out.

Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal's Bathys Wireless is a pair of high-quality over-ear Bluetooth headphones that offer active noise cancellation, as well as Bluetooth playback. These headphones are designed to be premium, high-end headphones that can be used at home or on the go. They're more expensive than other similar headphones, but their superior audio quality is the primary selling factor.

The Focal Bathys come in a compact, slim and attractive white fabric-finished retail box with all the accessories you'll need in. The package also includes a fold-flat carrying case for the headphones and for Running a USB-C cable to USB C cable, 1.2mmSE cable and an audio converter.

The battery's capacity is 600mAh, which will last for a whole day of listening to music casually. They also come with an audio input that you can use wired. When used wirelessly they're paired via Bluetooth and you'll be able control their functions through an app (now known as Focal & Naim likely in line with their English sister brand Naim's products for audio that are network-aware) or via the button located on the left earcup that scrolls between ANC profiles like'soft','silent transparent', and full.

Using the app allows you to alter different settings, including the brightness of the LED, EQ presets including a'music' profile that sounds brighter and more neutral than the other ones and also their battery life. It also gives you the ability to choose the ANC mode and the level, as well as setting an 'acoustic' environment that will adjust the sensitivity of your audio to simulate what it would sound like when worn in a room with different audio acoustics.

The Focal Bathys come with an incredibly bass-rich profile that gives more warmth, punch and impact to your most loved tracks. This means that instruments and vocals can be muted, and details like cymbals might be less noticeable than on other headphones. They're also not as effective at active noise cancellation when compared to other over-ears with more advanced technology, like the Sony WH-1000XM5 or Apple AirPods Max.

Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony has earned a reputable reputation for its headphones and the WH-1000XM5 is no exception. It is at the top end of the'mainstream' over-ear headphone market, edging into the 'luxury lifestyle' area where the likes of Bang & Olufsen, Apple and Montblanc are a common sight. The XM5s are expensive however, if you are able to find them, there's not a better pair of wireless headphones.

The XM5s come with features that simplify the lives of listeners and, in some instances, automate tasks that they'd otherwise have to deal with manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine (which upscales music that has been compressed to near high-res), as well as Bluetooth's LDAC Technology, are both included. This allows streaming of high-quality audio at bitrates higher than conventional buy bluetooth headphones online. There's even a built-in microphone to allow making hands-free calls.

The XM5 headphones aren't different from the previous generation headphones from WH, in terms of noise cancellation. They're among the best-performing cans to block out the continuous drones that can be heard in train and underground carriages. The XM5s do a great job of shielding listeners from the traffic noises of busy airports and streets also.

The sound quality is also great. The XM5s aren't as detailed in the low frequencies as the XM4, but there's a more pronounced sense of clarity and transparency as well. For example the bass work on Rage Against The Machine's Bullet in the Head flexes the Sonys muscles with real force and definition, without reducing the other elements. Similarly, Massive Attack's brooding Angel showcases the XM5's' ability to deliver accurate and precise bass notes.

Battery life is excellent with up to 30 hours listening time when ANC is in use and 40 hours if it's off. This is more than enough to last the weekend or a few days' heavy use.

The XM5s do not come with dust or water resistant. Sony actually recommends not sweating on them or taking them out in the rain. This may not be a problem for Running a lot of people, but it could cause a problem for anyone considering the XM5s who spend a lot of time at the gym or lives in a city with rain.

Apple AirPods Max

Apple AirPods Max is a pair of wireless headphones which feature Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. They feature 40mm Apple-designed dynamic drivers with a neutral audio profile that emphasizes the mids and highs while not going too loud on either end of the spectrum. This makes them great for both music and movies. They also have superior fidelity compared to most rival headphones.

The headphones have a light construction that is comfortable on the head. The ear cups are made of memory foam covered with woven fabric, and fit comfortably over the ear and do not place pressure on the sides or the forehead. The ear cups can tilt and rotate to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges offer an incredibly firm, yet not too strong clamping force that makes sure the ear cups remain in place during listening sessions.

A small button located on the top of the right ear cup lets you toggle noise cancelling modes. There's also a button that can be pushed, like a jog-dial, similar to the digital crown on the Apple Watch, that you can twist for volume control and press once, twice or thrice to playback control. Siri is activated by pressing and pressing the button. The buttons are simple to use and are well-placed, but I would have liked to have a power button that would shut off the headphones when they are not in use. The headphones are put into standby when they are removed from your ears, or when they are put in their case. They return to life when you place them over your head.

Another feature that is quite cool is spatial audio, which makes use of the accelerometers and gyroscopes in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to determine the direction you're going, and then repositions sound to create the illusion that they're coming from those places. This creates a cinema-like experience with videos and movies made in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or 7.1. Only iOS devices can be used to listen to spatial audio.

The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd be somewhat smug walking into an Apple Store and spending $549 on the headphones if I knew that they'd be outdone in a year by the new model. AirPods Pro are more expensive and have better battery life and advanced features.
