While it is true that both offer components of physical and energetic well-being, Hatha Yoga is derived from Tantra, focusing mostly on purity, balance, and health within the physical and energetic bodies. What we do in most yoga classes these days is just a small sliver of this type of practice, with the ultimate aim being to calm the mind and rest in our true nature. Although this style of yoga may not offer as intense a cardiovascular experience as, for example, a Vinyasa Flow or Ashtanga practice, it’s great for intermediate and advanced students too. This yoga style was developed by the prominent yogi BKS Iyengar. In 2005 the Belgian State organisation IACSSO (Informatie- en Adviescentrum inzake de Schadelijke Sektarische Organisaties) issued an advisory against Sahaja Yoga. Raja Yoga suggests the tool of meditation: slowing down the chaos of the mind so much that, for an extended period of time, there is only one, continuous thought. Effective alignment can help to achieve balance between body, mind and breath. It has the effect of energizing, relaxing and healing the body, letting everything fall into place. When we work on freeing the breath through pranayama (breathing exercises) we are also working on letting the life energy flow through the body.

Pranayama with fast rhythms or breath retention should not be practiced if you have asthma, heart disease, hypertension or are pregnant. The irony is that these "obstacles" are actually normal functions of a human mind, but we have forgotten that there is a deeper part of ourselves which comprises the mind, experiences our existence, and loving underlies and embraces everything. Raja Yoga is a study of the human mind, becoming aware of its habitual tendencies, and ultimately transcending identification with the body-mind-intellect complex through meditation to rest in the vast ocean of consciousness, which comprises it all. There are many varieties of Raja yogas but their formation generally involves the 9th, the 10th, the 2nd, the 11th house and the lagna ('Ascendant'), their respective house-lords and their exaltation signs and exaltation lords, which house-lords combining and giving rise to Raja yogas invariably tend to enhance the affairs of the house they occupy, aspect and rule.

What is Raja yoga and what solutions does yoga philosophy offer for that age-old problem - slowing down a chaotic mind? Eating excessively has been a problem I have been dealing with almost all my life and I used to eat out of suppressing emotions. He recognised that all bodies are unique and have different strengths and weaknesses. Daily stressors, tensions and physical habits can create physical and energetic obstacles in our bodies. This system, works with developing fitness, flexible stability, and awareness of all aspects of our being, starting with the grossest aspect of our existence (our physical bodies), and working inward toward the most subtle (our minds, intuition, and awareness). This helps to help develop strength and flexibility, along with sensitivity and awareness between the body and mind. The way to overcome these obstacles is by calming down the activity of the mind and resting in That which remains when all thinking and patterning of consciousness ceases. The activity levels of all the body's muscles, and the motor neurons (nerve cells) that activate them, is reduced as relaxation is practised, except for the diaphragm which is used in breathing; and the breathing rate reduces also.

Without even noticing it our breathing can become gradually more shallow or stilted. Even just taking time out to consciously become more aware of our breath can help us to start to alter our emotional states. Fulfillment in karma yoga lies not so much in doing many things as in acting more and more, even in little things, with the consciousness that it is the Divine who, truly, is the Doer. So even if you can’t do some of the more complex poses, making the effort to notice the breath and to carefully guide it will have equally profound effects on your practice. Rather, it has to do with a process more like coordinating and setting aside what is not significant or not-self (2.5). It means finding the jewel of Truth that is underneath or behind all of the other activities in the mind-field. In 10 days of total silence, my mind slowed down, and there were glimpses of a Truth more magnificent than any words could ever describe. This leads to total absorption in the nature of reality, known as Samadhi, although often it takes a long time and dedicated practice (abhyasa). Timing: unlike Vinyasa Yoga, in Iyengar yoga we hold poses longer periods of time.
