Seats

The majority of triple buggies begin as single pushchairs. Some models can be modified to accept a second seat with adapters. There are also models allow you to add a ride-on board for older children who wish to walk but require a little help.

Take a look at the Joie Evalite Duo for a lightweight option perfect for urban streets. It's easy to maneuver and comes with a large basket with lots of storage. It can be used for twins beginning at birth and will accept two car seats or a carrycot with a seat. However, the seats need to face forwards and there's no space to store a bag of groceries underneath and you'll need a sidepack for that.

Mountain Buggy Duet will be an ideal choice if you enjoy off-road driving. It's a side by side model with the slimmest footprint of any double buggy available. This makes it easier to fit through narrow doors and on public transport, and also allows you to go up and down kerbs without much trouble. It also has a handbrake on the handlebar that can be adjusted for more security and safety.

The UPPAbaby vista 2 double is another lightweight option that can be used by twins or a toddler and baby. The seats come with multi-position recline and UPF 50+ sunshades, while the canopy can be adjusted to keep the sun out of your child's eyes. The Vista 2 can even be transformed into a triple by the addition of UPPAbaby's "PiggyBack board designed for mobile older kids.

The iCandy Orange double buggies are one of the most sought-after on the market. This is due to their superb comfort. It's an all-terrain pushchair with soft suspension that makes light work of bumpy surfaces. It can accommodate up to 30 seating configurations and has an integrated ride-on board that can be used for older kids who prefer walking and a 'cinema seating' mode which raises the back seat for better visibility.

Alternately, the phil&teds dots is a great single buggy that is available from day one that can then easily adapt to take 2 (or 3 wheel stroller!) Different configurations are possible. This is especially useful when you have a child in a car seat since the frame can be equipped with a wedgie for optimum lie-flat positioning, or car seat adapters for various brands.

Suspension

The suspension of a triple wheeled buggy will determine how easy you and your child/children can push it. A smooth ride is crucial as babies can feel every bump on the road, especially if it's on rough terrain like grass or unpaved paths. Some models come with locking front tires that assist in maneuvering and getting over obstacles like curbs.

Some models have tyres with air filled that are ideal for all-terrain riding, however they are prone to punctures. Make sure you keep a spare set of tyres inside the trunk. Some models have gel or foam tyres, designed to take the bumps and can be less prone to punctures however, you may find them to be a bit stiff and uncomfortable on your child's back if you choose to jog.

MFM reviewer Kath tested the Urban Glide 2 with her three-year-old and newborn, and found it extremely capable on terrain that is difficult to navigate. "It glided effortlessly over sidewalks and grass cobbles, dirt, and tracks. It was also easy for me to navigate around corners and climb up and down kerbs." The 16" rear wheels, when combined with the lockable swivel wheels on the front, make it an extremely comfortable jogging experience. Folding

A three-wheel double buggy can be folded up in a neat manner for storage. There are models that fold flat and stand up (as when they were in a pushchair) as well as ones that pop out to reveal a more umbrella-style fold, with the option of a brake operated by hand. The more wheels a buggy has, in general the more easy it will be to maneuver on rough terrain. This is especially true if your wheels are bigger than the average size. You will have more stability, and it's less likely that you will be forced to tip over or flip your child.

Its clever frame expands widthways to accommodate a second seat, but it only weighs around 11kg so it's easy to lift and maneuver. It can also be used with a car seat or carrycot, so you get the best of both worlds and it future proofs your wallet as you don't need to buy a new buggy as soon as you get it.
