WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by 3. A random substat is also boosted alongside each upgrade item.

The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless the item upgrader kit is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like eth Titan weapons). These types of gear get less value from upgrading due to the requirement to roll to get a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied on any kind of armor or weapons. However, the item that is used for the upgrade will be consumed for the duration of time and can't be used again. Upgrades can be applied to enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended to visit the upgrader at least once every couple of weeks to ensure that your equipment is up to date.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item, however they'll always be cheaper than buying new equipment. For instance, upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points while purchasing the same item from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, armor, tool and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players from item upgraders NPCs for a variety of currencies. They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any weapon, tool or armor. button, which will display an item level Upgrade's preview when it is upgraded if the player has sufficient materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the item slot and the current item level and the weapon's price is higher than gloves or bracers for instance. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Some upgrades offer a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower cost.

Upgraders for items are available in a variety of locations including the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount and a chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrading increases as more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at the start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades require various methods, which is both an improvement as well as a disadvantage.

Crests

The first thing to note is that crests can only be used on equipment of a particular rank, and each rank has different requirements for its upgrade path. Players can earn crests by working through content at the appropriate level. This could be by doing outdoor activities, or by completing dungeons and raids in all difficulty levels to obtain lower-level gear or Mythic+ raid bosses or dungeons with a heroic difficulty for endgame gear. These crests can then be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC, such as Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade paths and steps.

Utilizing these new currencies isn't too complicated however, the system does introduce some changes to the overall upgrade process. Once a piece of gear reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it no longer requires Flightstones. This change is designed to allow players to get their equipment up to the highest ilvl possible on all their characters rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

Another significant modification is that crests have one use, so it's important to use them properly. It is best to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the top-quality equipment you can find and save Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly relevant for items like rings and trinkets that occupy several slots. The account-wide discount will only apply when all the slots on the character are filled with high-quality equipment.
