World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading

The upgrade of an item allows players to increase the gear score of an item upgrader mod up to 700, and then add a final perk. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory before heading to the kiln.

Certain items are worth upgrading because of their unique stats. (For instance an excellently broken point armor that is rolled can be used in melee PvP). Other items, like weapons don't really change after an upgrade and aren't worth the cost.

Weapons

Weapons can be upgraded to improve their numeric stats such as damage to attack, crit chance PvE and PvP damage. Weapons have a flat-rate bonus that increases damage per second. Items of armor can also be upgraded to improve their performance. For instance the Champion Leathers can be upgraded to +5 defense, allowing you to keep pace with a good-sized group of adversaries in most cold environments and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded up to +20 defense, providing you enough protection to survive a full on raid with a few friends.

Be aware that armor can't be upgraded in the same manner as weapons, so you'll want to concentrate on upgrading it to gain physical power if you're Warrior or Spell Power when you're Mage. It's also worthwhile to save your armor upgrades to use for armor you'll be wearing at the end of the game, like the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield, or the helmet you wear to fight the final boss as well as the Monter Parts merchant's mask.
