WoW Upgrades - The item Level Upgrade Upgrader

Upgrades can give you an increase in specific stats. Each upgrade increases item level by 3. Each upgrade also increases a random substat.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are less useful for those with higher variance due to the need to roll the perfect version.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enhancements.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the item slot, and the current level of the item upgrade. For example weapons cost more than gloves, bracers or bracers. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of Flightstones or crests that are used. After an item has been upgraded to a certain level, it can be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of the two currencies.

Many locations offer item upgraders which include the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade item discount and the chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrades increases with the number of items that are being upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II there is no upgrader for items available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead, the NPCs that can be used to upgrade require several methods, which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system was modified a bit, and numerous new features added. When a player has an upgrade to a specific item level for a particular armor slot, upgrading further items to that same item level will cost less, even if they belong to an entirely different set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones required for upgrades is reduced, and the discount is affixed to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is also reduced and is not available until players achieve certain milestones in their achievement.

Crests

When a piece attains the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it no longer requires Flightstones. This change is intended to allow players to upgrade their gear up to the highest level possible on all their characters, instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

It's also crucial to choose crests in a wise manner, as they have only one purpose. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the highest-quality gear that you can find, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly applicable to items like trinkets and rings that take up multiple slots. The discount on the account is only applicable when all slots on the character are filled with top-quality equipment.
